What is NIRK?

NIRK is a network that wants to promote a better transfer of knowledge between the structures already existing in Germany: that is cross talk between basic science, applied science, clinical centres, doctors in private offices, hospitals in the neighbourhood of the patients and the self support group Selbsthilfe Ichthyose e. V. On the other hand also topics that are relevant for research shall be introduced from every day life experience into research. Further aims are to promote the scientific study of ichthyoses and related keratinization disorders and to develop a national registry for these diseases.

NIRK developed originally within 2 dermatological societies in Germany: the so-called Arbeitsgemeinschaft Dermatologische Forschung (ADF/working group for dermatological science) and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft fuer Paediatrische Dermatologie (APD/working group for pediatric dermatology). It involves all researchers and clinicians in Germany who are active in research in ichthyosis and related keratinization disorders. NIRK has European links in particular to a European program called Gene Skin which is a coordination action within the 6th frame work of the European Union and is headed by Prof. G. Zambruno from Rome. NIRK is funded for a start up of 3 years by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany and started on October 1st 2003 with its work.
